The Justification of Rape
The Justification of Rape project was created by Katie O'Neill between 2019 and 2020. The project focuses on the subject of rape and sexual assault, paired with quotes made by people of high power, most of them being internationally recognised. All the quotes shown are of their attempts to justify the act of rape/sexual assault. Whether they were directly involved in the case or whether they just wanted to share their opinion.
All the quotes are shown below to go with the images as well as the artists thoughts process behind the work.
Image 1: "The facts show that people who are rape - who are truly raped - the juices don't flow , the body functions don't work and they don't get pregnant." - Former representative, Henry Aldridge (R-NC)
Image 2: "Rape victims should make the best of a bad situation." - Rick Santorum (R-PA)
Image 3: "Clearly a drunk can consent." - Canadian Justice Greg Leneham
Image 4: "Rape is kind of like the weather. If it's inevitable relax and enjoy it." - Clayton Williams (R-TX)
Image 5: "Told a rape victim she could "close her legs" to prevent the assault." - Judge John Russo Jr
Image 6: " She admitted that she used to do all dirty things. It appears that she was inherently abnormal and had sexual instinct from her childhood." - Indian High Court Judge Thomas Low
Image 7: "In the Emergancy room they have what's called rape kits, where a woman can get cleaned out." - Jodie Laubenberg (R-TX)
Image 8: "If a woman has the right to an abortion, why shouldn't a man be free to use his superior strength to force himself on a woman. At least the rapists pursuit of sexual freedom doesn't (in most cases) result in anyones death." - Lawrence Lockman (R-ME)

"What caused me to pursue this project was the Brock Turner case. The boy raped an unconscious girl behind a dumpster, he was found guilty and went to jail but due to it being jail, with good behaviour he was released 6 months after. Within his case there was a constant phrase used to describe Brock. Rather than it being talking about the crime that he has committed, it was instead talking about how he was a promising student and a star swimmer. His father justified his act and said that the sentence of Brock Turner was " A steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action."
The aim of this project was to cause shock, all throughout the book I wanted to almost give the viewers whiplash. The jump between positive and negative information. With the title of the book, my aim was to draw in the viewers from shock, in that someone would produce a book trying to justify rape and sexual assault. When they open the book, they are then facing some fairly nice and mundane pictures; scenes that they might come across in their everyday life. Through the book there are the above quotes, placed either next to or on the next pages. My intent was there to be the shock that someone has said these things, yet there has never been and press or push as to stopping these quotes. Most if not all of the quotes have never been heard before, despite them being said by powerful people.
The pictures within the book, in some way or another link to the quotes. I wanted to have them all seem quite normal; for there to be some sense of innocence, only for it to be taken away by quotes. Almost like in actual cases. People lose their innocence to the criminal who commit these acts. The victims have no power and have everything taken away from them." - Katie O'Neill
